    Weaknesses on display

    I write on the board a lot when I’m teaching. Wednesday, while reviewing sentence fragments with an English composition class, I had trouble getting the right letters in the right order in my words. It got to be a bit comical as the morning went on. One of the students commented that she appreciated that “it happens to you, too” as if she had thought her instructors were beyond mistakes and bad writing-on-the-board days. Of course, some instructors do try to give the impression of being the all-knowing, infallible purveyor of knowledge. I don’t take that approach in the classroom. Instead, I see myself and the students as going along together on a journey of learning. I…
